Modern Science and Catholic Faith: A St. Albert Initiative for Teachers and Students

  • St. Joseph's Preparatory 1733 West Girard Avenue Philadelphia, PA, 19130 United States (map)

The St. Albert Initiative is a half-day program on science and faith for Catholic high school students, teachers, and parents as well as interested members of the general public (high school age and above). It will feature short talks by Catholic scientists and the opportunity to meet, eat with, and ask questions of Catholic scientists in many fields and at various stages of their careers.

This initiative is named after St. Albert the Great, bishop, scientist, philosopher, theologian, teacher, and patron saint of natural science and scientists.

The St. Albert Initiative is sponsored by the Science and Religion Initiative of the McGrath Institute for Church Life, the Society of Catholic Scientists (SCS), and the Collegium Institute, with funding by grants from The John Templeton Foundation.

This event will take place at St. Joseph's Preparatory School on Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Light breakfast and sign-in at 9 a.m. Events start at 9:45 a.m.)

There will also be an optional, free presentation of 'All Creation Gives Praise' at the Franklin Institute planetarium the evening before the conference, Friday, March 24, at 7:00pm.

All Creation Gives Praise is a feature-length planetarium program, produced at the University of Notre Dame, that takes viewers on a journey through the Universe.  As we go, scientific explanations of what we see are blended with theological reflections on the meaning of what we see. To all who are troubled by the public perception that science and religion are somehow antithetical, this is the antidote. Viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions to Dr. Phil Sakimoto, former NASA Astronomer, professional planetarium presenter and Professor at the University of Notre Dame. Please indicate whether or not you would like to join for the planetarium presentation in the registration form for the conference.
