The Ethics of Killing: Anscombe's Contribution to Understanding Murder

Join Collegium Institute for a lunchtime lecture by Joshua Stuchlik, Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He serves as an Assistant Editor for the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly and during the 2022-2023 academic year, he will be a fellow at the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the United States Naval Academy. Prof. Stuchlik's primary area of research lies at the intersection of ethics and action theory, with his most recent work focusing specifically on Elizabeth Anscombe, just war theory, and the principle of double effect.

In this talk, Professor Stuchlik will share new insights that have emerged from his research into the Collegium Institute Anscombe Archive at Penn since publishing his recent book, Intention and Wrongdoing: In Defense of Double Effect (Cambridge, 2021). He will reconsider Anscombe's famous protest of the Allied atomic bombings and its revolutionary impact on contemporary moral philosophy.

Collegium Institute's Anscombe Papers Project promotes the legacy of Elizabeth Anscombe, an eminent analytic philosopher and Catholic intellectual, through scholarly and programmatic engagement with her archive (acquired by Collegium Institute in 2018), a treasure trove of over 600 items that deepen our understanding of her work.

Lunch will be provided. RSVP by Tuesday, March 21.
