Anscombe’s First University Lectures: What Anscombe Learned from Wittgenstein (Annual Anscombe Lecture in Ethics)

Join Collegium Institute for our Annual Anscombe Lecture in Ethics on Wednesday, April 22, featuring special guest John R.T. Berkman (University of Toronto). Prof. Berkman’s lecture, “Anscombe’s First University Lectures: What Anscombe Learned from Wittgenstein,” draws from his recent book Anscombe on Wittgenstein: Reminiscences of a Philosophical Friendship, published by Oxford University Press in 2025. He will explore the relationship between the eminent philosophers and examine how Wittgenstein’s intellectual influence shaped Anscombe’s first set of university lectures in 1948.

Prof. Berkman is a Professor of Moral Theology at Regis College at the University of Toronto. He currently serves as an Associate Fellow in Theological Ethics at Campion Hall, Oxford University. He received his PhD in Religion from Duke University and his BA in Philosophy from the University of Toronto.

The Annual Anscombe Lecture in Ethics commemorates Elizabeth Anscombe (1919-2001), former Penn Professor of Philosophy and one of the most influential woman philosophers and Catholic intellectuals of the modern era. It is supported by the Collegium Institute’s Anscombe Papers Project, which promotes Anscombe’s legacy, through scholarly and programmatic engagement with her archive, a newly acquired treasure trove of over 600 items that deepen our understanding of her work. Recent Anscombe Lectures have been delivered by Fr. Kevin Flannery SJ, Joshua Stuchlik, Graham Hubbs, Candace Vogler, and Jennifer Frey.

Date: Wednesday, April 22, 12:00 PM
