I Came to Cast Fire: A Conversation with Fr. Elias Carr on Why Rene Girard's Thought is Relevant Today

How can a modern Continental theorist help us deepen our appreciation of the Passion and Easter Season?  Join Collegium Institute and Word on Fire for an inaugural collaboration and virtual event exploring the groundbreaking work of Franco-American philosopher René Girard (1923-2015).  In a career spanning nearly six decades, Girard developed a theory of mimesis and scapegoating that elucidated the bonds between humankind and God.  Fr. Elias Carr’s new book, I Came To Cast Fire: An Introduction to René Girard, makes the lifework of this highly influential scholar available to a wider audience.

What do I want and why? What is the Scapegoat Mechanism and how does it work? What is the connection between violence and human culture? How does divine revelation end up demythologizing myth and revealing the innocent victim? Why is the Holy Spirit important in this historical process? How do Girard’s ideas cast light on our current social and political upheavals? These questions and more will be untangled by Fr. Elias and Katy Carl, editor of Word on Fire’s Luminor literary imprint, in a virtual discussion streamed on Zoom on Thursday, April 24.

Date: Thursday, April 24 at 12:00 pm EST

Location: Virtual via Zoom (the link will be sent to RSVPed attendees)
