Winged Ox Forum (Fall 2022)

Medicine Builds Narrative Communities

Rolling application

The Collegium Institute invites your application for the 2022-23 Winged Ox Forum, a community of fellows exploring the relationship between medicine and Christian theology. The Forum welcomes a small cohort of grad students, advanced undergrads, and resident physicians each semester to participate in discussions over nourishing fare. We foster a community for friendly and professional encouragement, mentorship, sharing of research, and theological formation. Guests of fellows are welcome to join discussions, and the Forum will also invite guests such as physicians, psychologists, theologians, philosophers, and ministers. There will also be opportunities to mentor undergraduates, particularly those participating in Collegium's Medical Humanities program.

This year, we'll host topical discussions over meals and happy hours (classically, symposia). Fellows can discuss how to use medicine to enact practical plans and strategies for building "thick" Christian communities, i.e., associations of mutual benefit structured around the narrative and person of Christ. Gatherings will be more conversational in nature and will encourage personal dialogue and brainstorming along with networking. Topics include:

  • Two-tiered ethics and two-tiered health systems

  • Medicine and mutual benefit

  • Faithful FM, PEDS, and OBGYN practice

  • Apprenticeship and discipleship

  • Saving souls vs. saving/maximizing lives

  • And more, open to suggestions!

  • (Meeting dates TBD)

Location: To be announced soon.

Readings: Physical copies of the readings will be handed out to participants at the first meeting.

Application: Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please click the button below to apply.

Please note that this program is open to current students at the University of Pennsylvania and other University City colleges.
