Please note that this lecture is now scheduled for 7:30pm instead of 7:00pm.

Collegium Institute and the Penn Catholic Newman Community are pleased to welcome Prof. Dermot Moran to deliver this year’s Annual Newman Lecture. Prof. Moran is the inaugural holder of the Joseph Chair in Catholic Philosophy at Boston College. He previously served as Director of the International Centre for Newman Studies, University College Dublin (UCD), established by UCD for the Study of the Life, Times and Work of John Henry Newman, 1801-1890, First Rector of UCD.

Prof. Moran was previously Full Professor of Philosophy at University College Dublin, holding the National University of Ireland Statutory Chair of Philosophy (Metaphysics & Logic) since 1989 until retirement in 2018. He has been Visiting Professor at Yale University, Northwestern University, Rice University, and Connecticut College and holds the position of Honorary Professor at multiple universities. He was awarded the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal in the Humanities in 2012 and an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the National and Kapodistrian University in Athens in 2015.

In this lecture, he will discuss the philosophical contributions, and especially the philosophies of education, of two towering figures of Catholic Philosophy (both converts and, now, both canonized saints)—John Henry Newman and Edith Stein. Both shared a deep religious faith, a strong will and a stubborn sense of moral rectitude and intellectual conviction, as well as a deep concern for spiritual development, the cultivation of the inner life, and a devotion to others at great personal cost (and to martyrdom in the case of Stein). John Paul II noted that for both thinkers, their philosophy was enriched by their faith. Edith Stein studied Newman by translating his works into German. She found in Newman a kindred spirit. They were both fascinated with the boundless depth of the human person. Both had an educational and moral vision that Prof. Moran will explore in this talk.
