All students, alumni, and friends are welcomed to attend this free Alumni Weekend event, co-sponsored by Collegium Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture and the Penn Newman Center. Join us for a casual buffet brunch, fellowship, and brief remarks by Dr. Terence Sweeney, Collegium Institute’s Theologian-in-Residence and coordinator of the Catholic Humanism Fellowship at Penn. Dr. Sweeney will discuss the role and impact of Catholic Humanism in the pilgrimage of our life as understood through three ideas: the Good, the True, and the Beautiful.

A group of students reading Dante and exploring their pilgrimage to the good. A classroom examining what it means to be true to self, to others, and to God. A trip to an Art Museum to see how God’s glory shines through human creations. These are not your standard educational moments at a secular Ivy League university. But they are the heart of the Collegium Institute’s new Catholic Humanism Fellowship. Dr. Sweeney will reflect on the shape, growth, and meaning of the Fellowship at Penn and the impact of the Catholic intellectual tradition in the broader academy.
St. Agatha-St. James Church will celebrate 9am Mass on Sunday, May 15, and we will gather for our brunch event immediately afterward in the adjacent Penn Newman Center.
Theologian-in-Residence Terence Sweeney, PhD, holds a doctorate in philosophy from Villanova University where he was a Theology-Philosophy Fellow. His scholarly work centers on Augustine, medieval thought, and philosophical theology in the Continental tradition. His dissertation was on Augustine and the ethics of participative community. His work has been published in the International Journal of Philosophy and Theology, Heythrop Journal, the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophy and Theology, and Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture. He has also written for First Things, America Magazine, Public Discourse, Comment Magazine, and Church Life Journal. Terence coordinates Collegium’s Graduate Fellows program, our Catholic Humanism Fellowship, and programs based around the Anscombe Archive. He is the Editor-at-Large for our Genealogies of Modernity Project.
