Join Collegium Institute for this thought-provoking virtual lecture and Q&A on a new Catholic vision of American history this Tuesday, December 9, the Feast of Juan Diego.
Most ways of framing American history share the common assumption that America should be judged by its success or failure at living up to the founding ideals of liberty and equality. But what if Catholics looked at American history through a different lens: the inculturation of an Old-World Catholic faith to the New World conditions of enduring indigenous traditions and ever-changing Western modernity? In this virtual event, Prof. Christopher Shannon (Christendom College) will explore this new vision of Catholic modernity as emerging from the 1531 apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the indigenous peasant, Juan Diego. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding next year, Prof. Shannon will argue for shifting our understanding of freedom as autonomy toward the development of the solidarity of peoples seeking to know and love both God and their neighbor.
Christopher Shannon is Associate Professor of History at Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. His research focuses on modern American cultural, intellectual, and religious history. He is the author of several books on American Catholic history, including American Pilgrimage: A Historical Journey through Catholic Life in a New World (2022) and The Past as Pilgrimage: Narrative, Tradition and the Renewal of Catholic History (2013).
