Please save the date for Collegium’s annual Intellectual Retreat on Saturday, April 5 on the philosophy of friendship from the classical period until today. This retreat serves as one of three seminars exploring the nature of friendship as part of our Symposium Series co-sponsored by Villanova University’s Humanities Department and Eastern University’s Honors College.
In this intellectual retreat, we will examine the classical and contemporary problems posed to building relationships with a variety of friends: our peers, spouses, and even God Himself. We will explore the particular set of practices and actions associated with the classical ideal of friendship and evaluate how they are adjusted or transformed within the Christian tradition.
Over the course of the day, we will engage in seminar discussions and private reflection at the historic Ivy Hall Mansion, located in Philadelphia’s scenic Overbrook neighborhood. In the afternoon, weather-permitting, we will head to nearby Morris Park to consider how the natural world facilitates our friendship with one another and our spiritual friendship with God.
Date: Saturday, April 5 (approximately 9:30am - 4:30pm)
Location: Ivy Hall. Transportation to and from Penn’s campus will be provided for all Penn participants.
