The Collegium Institute 2022 Annual Newman Lecture
“John Henry Newman and Edith Stein On Christian Education”
Presented by Prof. Dermot Moran
In February of 2022, Collegium Institute, together with the Penn Catholic Newman Community, welcomed Prof. Dermot Moran of Boston College and University College Dublin to present the Annual Newman Lecture.
Prof. Moran is the inaugural holder of the Joseph Chair in Catholic Philosophy at Boston College, where his research areas include medieval Christian philosophy and contemporary European philosophy, especially phenomenology. In this lecture, he discusses the philosophical contributions, and especially the philosophies of education, of two towering figures of Catholic Philosophy (both converts and, now, both canonized saints)—John Henry Newman and Edith Stein. John Paul II noted that for both thinkers, their philosophy was enriched by their faith. They were both fascinated with the boundless depth of the human person. Both had an educational and moral vision that Prof. Moran will explore in this talk.
