Join the parish of St. Francis de Sales United by the Most Blessed Sacrament, co-sponsored by the Collegium Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture, for “Father Augustus Tolton and the Black Catholic Experience in America.”

Father Stephen D. Thorne will share his reflections on the life of Father Augustus Tolton, the first African-American priest to be ordained in the United States, whose cause for canonization is under way. In sharing Tolton’s story, Father Thorne will also speak about the past and present experience of Black Catholicism in the United States and where he sees new opportunities for growth and renewal in the Church today.

Reverend Stephen D. Thorne is Pastor of Saint Martin de Porres Parish, Philadelphia.

Saint Francis de Sales Parish United by the Most Blessed Sacrament is a proudly blended parish. Saint Francis de Sales Parish was founded in 1890; Most Blessed Sacrament Parish was founded in 1901; St. Francis de Sales Church was built in 1911; and the two parishes merged here in 2007. Today, we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in an urban setting to diverse members who form a Catholic community of believers of all ages. Our worship together overflows into charity evidenced by service, justice, and peace.
